Job Summary: 

The Excavator Operator and Crew Leader is responsible for operating heavy machinery, specifically excavators, to perform repairs within the sanitary sewer system. This position also involves leading a small crew to ensure that repair and maintenance tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with industry standards. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in operating excavation equipment around active utilities, performing sewer system repairs, and leading field crews.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Excavator Operation:

  •   Safely operate an excavator to dig trenches, lift materials, and perform other tasks required for point repairs on sanitary sewer lines.
  •  Conduct routine maintenance checks on the excavator and other machinery to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  •  Interpret site plans and blueprints to determine the correct locations for excavation and repair work.

2. Point Repairs:

  •  Perform point repairs on sewer lines, ensuring that repairs are done correctly and efficiently to prevent future issues. 
  • Assess the condition of sewer lines during repairs and recommend any additional maintenance or replacement as needed.
  • Ensure all repairs are compliant with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company standards.

3. Crew Leadership:

  • Lead a small crew of workers, assigning tasks, providing guidance, and ensuring that all work is completed safely and on time.
  • Train and mentor crew members on excavation techniques, safety protocols, and proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Coordinate with the operations and project management to ensure that project timelines and objectives are met.

4. Safety and Compliance:

  • Enforce safety protocols on the job site, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to OSHA trenching and excavation regulations.
  • Conduct safety briefings and tool-box talks with the crew to discuss potential hazards and safe work practices.
  • Monitor the job site for any potential safety risks and take corrective action as necessary.

5. Communication and Reporting:

  • Maintain clear and effective communication on a daily basis
  • Keep detailed records of daily activities, including work performed, materials used, and any issues encountered.
  • Report on project progress, crew performance, and equipment status as required

6. Customer Interaction:

  • Interact with property owners or site managers as needed, providing updates on repair work and addressing any concerns they may have.
  • Ensure that work is conducted with minimal disruption to surrounding properties and that the site is left clean and orderly upon completion.

Qualifications:

 Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience operating an excavator, preferably in the sanitary sewer industry.
  • Previous experience in performing point repairs on sewer lines and leading a small crew is highly desirable.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Proficiency in operating an excavator and other heavy machinery.
  • Strong understanding of sewer system infrastructure and repair techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and OSHA regulations related to excavation and sewer repairs
Certifications:
  • A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required.
  • Certification in excavation safety or related fields is a plus.
  • OSHA safety certification is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Travel Monday – Friday to jobsites all over the South. Travel time is paid and a company vehicle is provided from the office to the jobsite.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 50 pounds).
  • Willingness to work in confined spaces and at varying heights.
  • Availability for overtime and on-call work as needed.
Work Environment:
  • The role involves working on construction sites, often in challenging environments such as confined spaces and near active roadways.
